Sound Healing FAQs: What to Expect & What You Don’t Need to Worry About
If you're curious about sound healing but not quite sure what to expect — you're not alone. I often receive the same handful of questions from people who are either completely new to this practice or unsure if it's right for them. This blog is here to gently guide you through the most common ones, so you can arrive feeling more at ease and open to the experience.
1. "What if I can't meditate?"
You don’t need to be a seasoned meditator to experience the benefits of sound healing. In fact, one of the beautiful aspects of sound is that it naturally helps quiet the mind. That said, it's also completely normal for the mind to feel very active during a sound journey — especially if you're not used to giving yourself space to just be.
Often, when we pause and the body begins to rest, the mind sees it as an opportunity to catch up: reminding you of to-do lists, replaying past events, imagining future scenarios — anything but switching off (unlike the person next to you who seems to have floated into a deep rest!).
This is a common part of the process, and there's no need to resist it or get frustrated. Instead, try gently acknowledging the mental chatter: "I hear you, but right now I'm going to focus on..." — whether it's your breath, the sounds around you, the stillness, or a sensation in your body.
Use the experience as a mindfulness practice. Bask in awareness. Receive the frequencies, no matter what your mind is doing. Trust in the subtle, cellular shifts that are happening moment by moment — and surrender to the magic.
2. "What if I fall asleep?"
This is incredibly common and completely okay! Sound healing creates a space where your nervous system can deeply relax, and for many, that leads to sleep. Even if you drift off, your body and subconscious are still receiving the healing vibrations. Sleep is often a sign that your body feels safe enough to let go.
3. "What if I snore?"
Trust me — it happens more often than you think, and it's never a problem. Snoring is actually quite common in sound healing sessions, and it often only lasts a short time. In group experiences, it’s something to be expected — a sign that someone has dropped into a deep state of rest.
That said, for group settings, I do encourage those who are prone to snoring to lie on their side if that feels comfortable, as it can help reduce the likelihood.
4. "What can I expect to feel?"
Everyone’s experience with sound healing is unique. Some people feel deeply relaxed, some notice tingling sensations or waves of energy, while others may feel emotional release or insight arise. You might feel calm, light, tearful, sleepy, expanded, or even nothing at all in the moment. All of it is valid — the healing continues long after the session ends.
5. "Is it in a bath?"
This one always makes me smile. While it's called a "sound bath," there's no water involved! The term refers to being bathed in sound waves. During a session, you’ll usually lie down on a mat or blanket, fully clothed, surrounded by the soothing sounds of instruments like crystal bowls, chimes, drum, gong, or voice. It’s about immersion — in frequency, not water.
6. "Do I need to bring a swimsuit?”
You’d be surprised how often this question comes up! And no — swimsuits are not needed. All you need is something comfortable to lie down in. I recommend bringing a yoga mat, blanket, cushion or eye mask — whatever helps you feel cozy and supported.
7. "What’s best for me — a private 1:1 session or joining a group session?"
This ultimately depends on what you're seeking from the experience, as well as a few other factors. Here are some things to consider:
Personal comfort: If you're someone who feels more comfortable in a one-on-one setting or has specific personal challenges you'd like to work through, a private session may be ideal. It offers more tailored guidance and space for introspection.
Your needs & expectations: If you're looking for deep personal healing or clarity on specific issues, a private session allows for focused, one-on-one attention. However, group sessions can still offer profound healing, especially if you're open to shared energy and the collective experience.
Budget: Private sessions often come at a higher cost, as they are one-on-one and more personalized. Group sessions are a more budget-friendly way to experience sound healing in a supportive, communal setting.
Social comfort: Some people find group sessions to be a beautiful way to connect with others and feel supported by a like-minded community. If you're more introverted or prefer privacy, a 1:1 session might feel more aligned.
